A Rocha Ghana, environmental NGO, in partnership with Ghana Wildlife Society, Sahadji and Ghenvironment.org have announced winners of an art contest organized as part of a celebration of this year's International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB).

The winner of the IDB 2021 contest is Pratiksha Jadhav 14, from Rajarambapu English High school, India, the first runner-up is Nadia Shaibu, 15, from Alsyd Academy and the second runner up is Isla Danquah, 11, from Home-schooled.

The art competition was to allow students from the age of 6years to15years to express what the theme of the IDB means to them and how they can implement nature-based solutions for climate change, health issues, food and water security, sustainable livelihoods and biodiversity loss. The young people were therefore encouraged to use their artistic skills to raise awareness, which featured in the theme of International Day for Biodiversity.

A statement by A Rocha Ghana, Ghana Wildlife Society, Sahadji, and GH Environment.org said “With close to 100 entries, different artistic interpretations, styles and expressions were used to depict the theme for the art contest We’re part of the solution #ForNature which seeks to bring awareness to International Day for Biological Diversity and serve as a reminder that everyone of us can be a part of the solution to help save and secure our wonderful biodiversity”.

“In line with our shared commitments to Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, UN Global Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 and our commitment to Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 15, we seek to promote quality education and learning, while we protect, restore and promote sustainable solutions towards addressing biodiversity loss”, the statement added.

Participants created one titled original piece of art which was done by hand using markers, crayons, coloured pencils and/or paint on A3 or A2 paper. Participants therefore took good quality picture or scan from the original work and emailed to A Rocha Ghana.

The winner and runners- up were selected by a panel of judges, based on creativity and originality.

The prize for the winner is Certificate, Art supplies, and Canvas tote bag and two free art sessions with renowned artist Sahadji. The first runner-up received Certificate, Canvas tote bag, and Art supplies, with the second runner-up receiving Certificate, Canvas tote bag and Art supplies.
